Hyundai, Fountain Valley

October 21st, 2014 by Fiedler Group

Fiedler Group is proud to announce the opening of Hyundai’s new hydrogen fuel vehicle maintenance and training facility.

Located at 18335 Mt. Langley, Fountain Valley, California, the project consisted of the conversion of a 3,300 square foot existing warehouse bay into a hydrogen vehicle maintenance and mechanic training facility.

In this facility, Hyundai is able to both service vehicles and train mechanics to service the new line of hydrogen fuel vehicles in a new conference area.

To address the unique challenges associated with safely servicing hydrogen vehicles within a building environment, Fiedler Group applied a three step architectural and MEP design approach:

  • Assessment of the existing facility conditions,
  • Review of applicable Codes and Standards, including NFPA 2, 30A, & 52, and California Mechanical and Fire Codes (based on International Code Council)
  • Design implementation that included hydrogen detection and mitigation measures such as:
    • hydrogen detectors
    • appropriate ventilation rates
    • static-free floors and walls
    • explosion proof devices
    • special vehicle grounding
    • other measures designed to address possible hydrogen leaks.

Fiedler Group was also responsible incorporation of the owner’s interior design criteria and complete processing of permitting with the City of Fountain Valley, CA

The contractor for this project was Norm Wilson and Sons, Inc. based in Long Beach, California.
