Principal Engineer, PE
As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for providing hands-on technical expertise and direction to the Alternative Fuels team in designing and value engineering our client’s programs upholding the highest engineering ethics and standards of conduct. In this role you will be engaged in basic project functions of production, coordination, planning, organizing, directing, and quality control as well as providing mentoring to technical professionals to assist in their training and development. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Provides hands-on direction and coordination of all civil design activities, identifying potential design and scheduling issues and implementing cost-effective solutions, managing and evaluating both direct reports and outside consultants (civil, survey, landscape, Geotech, etc.)
• Completes Conceptual and Preliminary Site Plan development; Determination of Civil / Stormwater design requirements; Entitlement design submittals; Design coordination of outside design consultants (civil, survey, and landscape); Construction document development; Development of WQMP, SWPPP, NOI plans and applications; and Bid and construction support.
• Prepare / review basis of design reports, design memos, construction specifications, and other project-related documents, as needed.
• Defines scope of work for each project, and has full responsibility for interpreting, organizing, assigning project tasks and, approving all drawing packages, exhibits and documents assembled.
• Prepares and/or distributes cost estimates, proposals, schedules, timelines and any scheduled Project deliverables (i.e. status reports, meeting reports, site specific reports, conceptual and preliminary plans, drawings, etc.) to project manager and/or client.
• Timely recognize cost over-runs and communicate out of scope work to respective project managers along with providing accurate design services proposals and/or change orders.
• Schedules, coordinates and attends meetings with project team, client and/or review agencies, and ensures that timely and appropriate documents (exhibits, progress prints, backup data, etc.) required for the meetings are prepared by the team.
• Engages in negotiations on behalf of our clients’ interests, and successfully acquires all project permit approvals.
• Works with team to develop novel approaches and solutions to technical problems. Recommends changes or improvements to plans and programs.
• Shares experiences and insight with the design team to help the team produce deliverables that are sound and follow local design standards, criteria, guidelines and engineering practices.
• Provides technical advice and counsel to clients, assisting them in achieving accurate understanding of project issues.
• Reviews for accuracy and approves employee timecards and consultant invoices according to company standards
• Responsible for quality control checks, reviewing calculations, designs, evaluations and specifications developed by design staff for accuracy and completeness.
• Ensures that all deliverables issued by Fiedler Group are accurate, complete, and comply with customer’s standards / specifications, and applicable codes
• Responsible for the accuracy, cost controls, budget, reporting, and timeliness of all assigned projects and related client management.
• Responsible for ensuring team members thoroughly understand and apply all relevant client design standards and procedures.
• Responsible for managing all aspects of assigned civil projects including Control, Organization, Planning and Communication with internal and external team members, jurisdictional agencies, and client representatives.
• Leads in the preparation of proposals, RFP bid submittals, and contracts.
• Responsible for the Direct supervision of the Civil Design Team in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws up to and including interviewing, hiring, training, and coaching employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
May directly supervise civil engineering and design employees in the California office. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
