CTE TO SUPPORT ANOTHER GROUNDBREAKING MILESTONE IN ZERO-EMISSION DEPLOYMENTS: Class 8 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks to Service the Entire Northern California Region
August 4th, 2021 by Fiedler Group
Fiedler Group congratulates the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) for being awarded a multi-million-dollar grant to support the largest commercial deployment of thirty (30) Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks (FCET) to service Northern California. The NorCAL ZERO Project, also known as Zero-Emission Regional Truck Operations with Fuel Cell Electric Trucks, will expand the domestic supplier base of low-emission vehicles with the inclusion of world-wide manufacturer, Hyundai.
The Hyundai XCIENT (Hyundai Motor To Deploy XCIENT Fuel Cell Trucks for Regional Freight Distribution in California | Autos Community) of (Hyundai’s XCIENT Fuel Cell Hitting the Road in California) Class 8 FCET has a driving range of more than 400 miles, completing multiple duty cycles on a single fill of hydrogen, and delivering a cleaner class of vehicle while meeting all performance requirements. In addition to the deployment of the 30 FCET’s, this project will provide a high-capacity and high-throughput liquid hydrogen fueling station servicing up to fifty (50) trucks with back-to-back fueling capability provided by First Element Fuel (FEF).
“We are proud to fund this hallmark deployment of 30 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks and improve the air quality in northern California,” said Hannon Rassool, Deputy Director of Fuels and Transportation Division at the California Energy Commission. “These investments will support zero-emission trucks and infrastructure development and deployment as part of the U.S. market ecosystem. Public and private project partners have come together to take a big step forward in decarbonizing freight and goods movement, as part of CARB and CEC’s clean air initiatives.”
The success of this project will be realized through the numerous specialty partners CTE assembled and plans to manage throughout the deployment. Fiedler Group is a proud member of the CTE Team gathered to support this landmark project. Fiedler Group will design and engineer the upgrades for the NorCal Kenworth maintenance facility with hydrogen detection and ventilation equipment.
“The deployment of these trucks in northern California provides a groundbreaking opportunity to demonstrate the exceptional performance of fuel cell electric trucks for an industry that has traditionally relied on conventional diesel and CNG vehicles,” said Jaimie Levin, CTE’s Director of West Coast Operations. “We look forward to being a part of a new era for trucking across the U.S. – one marked by zero-emission vehicles that don’t force fleets to compromise on performance.”
