Hyundai Plans High Efficiency Fuel Cell Vehicle to Compete with Toyota and Honda
January 19th, 2016 by Fiedler Group
In 2014, South Korean automaker, Hyundai, delivered its Tucson fuel cell crossover model to customers in Southern California.
Since then, the second largest automaker in Asia now faces competition from competitor vehicles that stand on their own platform, in their own stylings.
While Hyundai’s Tucson model is a conversion from an existing model, Toyota’s Mirai and Honda’s Clarity are unique, dedicated vehicles of their own.
To compete with these vehicles, Hyundai will also launch a dedicated fuel-cell vehicle.
While the company did not indicate if the model would be a crossover or SUV, it did suggest a range of 500 miles.
Comparatively, the Mirai sports an EPA-rated range of 312 miles; the Tucson’s current fuel cell range is quoted at just 265 miles.
Experts expect building a new model on its own platform will help the automaker build a more efficient fuel cell-powered vehicle, rather than adapting to an existing platform.
There have also been discussions to support a Kia (Hyundai’s sister brand) fuel-cell car, but it is expected the Kia model will share commonalities with Hyundai’s SUV.
