Clean Energy Fuels Corp. Expands LNG Production Capacity to Meet Growing Demand
June 18th, 2024 by Fiedler Group
As the largest provider of natural gas fuel for the transportation market in North America, Clean Energy Fuels Corp (Clean Energy) has successfully completed the construction of a third production train at its liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Boron, California. This expansion increases the plant’s volume capacity by 50 percent, solidifying its position as the largest facility of its kind in the Southwest U.S. The Boron plant can now produce up to 270,000 gallons of cleaner-burning LNG daily, meeting the rising demand for bulk LNG from a diverse range of customers including city buses and large container ships.
Fueling with LNG offers substantial environmental benefits, particularly in port areas that frequently suffer from severe air pollution. LNG-powered ships significantly improve air quality by surpassing the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2030 standards for ocean vessels, achieving zero sulfur emissions.
Pasha Hawaii, a Clean Energy customer applying LNG in the maritime shipping industry, now operates three LNG-powered container ships from the Ports of Long Beach, Oakland, and Honolulu reaching an impressive requirement of 2,115,726 gallons in April 2024 . Since the commissioning of Pasha Hawaii’s first LNG-powered ship in August 2022, Pasha Hawaii’s LNG ships have achieved a 90 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide and a 25 percent reduction in carbon dioxide compared to traditional fuel-powered vessels.
“Pasha Hawaii’s leadership in sustainable shipping has grown with the commissioning of their third LNG-powered ship. By expanding their LNG fleet, they are not only reducing pollution and carbon emissions around the ports but also demonstrating that LNG can be as effective as traditional fuel oil,” said Greg Roche, Vice President at Clean Energy. “The increased LNG production at our Boron facility will enable other customers to decarbonize their operations.” Fiedler Group applauds Clean Energy’s commitment to supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources, helping to mitigate environmental impacts and promote sustainability across all avenues of transportation.
