Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) have submitted applications to the California Public Utilities Commission seeking about $1 billion in funding to install thousands of electric vehicle charger stations at homes, workplaces, and port locations.
PG&E, which serves a 70,000-square-mile service area in northern and central California, submitted seven proposed projects for a total budget of about $253 million, including $211 million for a five year infrastructure project for electric school buses, transit agencies, and delivery fleets charging systems.
SDG&E applied for $246 million for installation of up to 90,000 charging stations at single family homes, installation of up to 45 charging ports to enable electrification of about 90 new pieces of ground support equipment at San Diego International Airport, and other related projects.
SCE, southern California’s primary service provider, asked for permission to collect $570 million from customers over five years to pay for equipment installations supporting about 1,800 charging stations for electric trucks and other.
A second program seeks funding to set up a charging infrastructure for heavy-duty commercial and industrial vehicles at ports, warehouses, and along its freeways.
These applications by the major utility providers to install thousands of chargers suggests that the utilities support California Senate Bill 350, which called upon electricity suppliers to seek approval for programs designed to reduce dependence on petroleum, meet air qualitystandards, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030; and to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.
