7-Eleven Completes First Residential Drone Delivery
August 16th, 2016 by Fiedler Group
Where the headlines often tease readers with hopes of Amazon’s drone delivery service, 7-Eleven has actually done exactly that.
The global convenience giant partnered with a company called Flirtey — which provides independent drone delivery services — to complete the first fully-autonomous drone delivery to a customer’s home.
The delivery — which coincides with 7-Eleven‘s 89th birthday celebration — represents the first time a customer in the United States has received a package via drone, representing a huge step forward for global commerce.
Conducted in Reno, Nevada, the two drone deliveries — which required precision flight plans, detailed procedures, and other steps to protect resident safety and privacy — loaded both hot and cold food items into a Flirtey container, flew utilizing GPS, and lowered gently into each family’s backyard.
The hope is that drone deliveries will be able to include essential home items like batteries and sunscreen, on a 24/7 basis, tapping-in to both instant gratification via delivery, and convenience, whenever, wherever.
