Santa Clarita Transit Adds CNG Commuter Coaches to Its Fleet
April 5th, 2016 by Fiedler Group
Santa Clarita Transit has replaced 35 percent of its diesel-powered commuter buses with compressed natural gas (CNG) commuter coaches.
Located north of Los Angeles, the City of Santa Clarita‘s transit system is one of the first public transportation operators in the United States to use alternative fuel vehicles for commuter transportation.
While Santa Clarita Transit had used compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles for its local routes since 2014, the historical challenges of range and power limited use of the coaches.
However, when Motor Coach Industries (MCI) introduced the Cummins 8.9-liter compressed natural gas engine to its commuter coaches, the City saw an opportunity to further fulfill its commitment to clean-burning CNG.
The new feature also aligned with the City Council’s authorization to purchase five new commuter buses to replace the transit system’s older fleet vehicles.
City of Santa Clarita Mayor, Bob Kellar, commented, “It’s great to see our new compressed natural gas coaches on the road. Not only do they represent our ongoing commitment to provide safe and reliable service, but they demonstrate our desire to do so in an efficient and environmentally friendly fashion.”
Staff members indicate their are aiming to have a 100 percent alternative fuel fleet within the next 10 years.
