SCAQMD Launches Incentive Program Boosting Residential Electrical Vehicle Charging Stations

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) recently launched an incentive program to encourage Southern California residents to consider electric vehicles.

By making the process of charging vehicles at home more affordable, the incentive program works to help the region reduce vehicle emissions.

While several efforts — both private and public — work together to make alternative energy vehicle ownership more attractive, perhaps the most convenient option is being able to plug-in an electric vehicle in one’s home.

The pilot program drives down the cost of Level 2 residential charging stations, which can cost up to $800, with rebates up to $250.

Additional rebates of up to $250 are also available for low-income residents.

The Level 2 charging stations use 240 volt outlets and charges faster than Level 1 charging stations, which use standard 120 volt outlets.

The incentive program specifies the stations need to be in place for at least three years; installers — whether residents or licensed electricians — are responsible for obtaining any required electrical permits from the city or county.
