California Energy Commission Incentives Help Promote Natural Gas Vehicles

September 1st, 2015 by Fiedler Group

The Natural Gas Vehicle Project (NGVIP) — funded by the California Energy Commission — officially opened for business to private and public non-transit applicants this month.

Being administered on behalf of CEC by the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Irvine, NGVIP will use over $10 million dollars to promote the adoption of alternative fuel vehicles by reducing the purchase price of new natural gas vehicles through incentives.

Alternative fuel vehicles are a low-cost alternative to gasoline and diesel while also offering lower carbon emission benefits.

Incentives, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis, range from $1,000 for light natural gas vehicles to $25,000 for NGVs with a GVW exceeding 33,001 pounds.

Only vehicles model year 2014 and later are eligible; the vehicles must also be found eligible in CARB’s Certification Program. Further, the cars must be registered and operated on natural gas in California for at least three years.
