South Coast AQMD Releases 2015 Clean Car Buying Guide

April 28th, 2015 by Fiedler Group

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has released its 2015 Clean Car Buying Guide — a special edition of its Advisor bi-monthly publication.

Some of the vehicles featured in this special publication include plug-in electric cars, vehicles that are HOV lane-eligible, or even more futuristic vehicles.

SCAQMD is the air pollution control agency for California’s Orange County as well as major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties.

The organization’s annual guide is intended to help consumers make informed decisions about purchasing alternative fuel vehicles.

This year’s guide highlights new fuel cell vehicles and fuel cell technology, heavy-duty clean buses and trucks, as well as a look back on the history of invention of the electric vehicle, dating back to the 1890s.

True to its name, the buying guide compares Advanced Technology-Partial Zero-Emission Vehicles (AT-PZEVs), Transitional Zero Emission Vehicles (TZEVs), and Partial Zero-Emission Vehicles (PZEVs) by analyzing each vehicle’s incentives, passenger capacity, and carbon footprint.

The guide also presents a comprehensive comparison of different vehicle technologies, illustrating the benefits of alternative fuel vehicles.

Types of vehicles evaluated include:

  • Diesel
  • Gasoline
  • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
  • Extended Range Plug-In Hybrid Electric
  • Plug-In Hybrid Electric
  • Hydrogen Fuel-Cell, and
  • Electric

While different vehicle technology’s MPG, driving range, average charging/refueling time, smog rating, and greenhouse gas rating are all compared, so too is the cost savings in five years — sometimes reaching $8,500.
