Luminous Tiles Provide Information On Carpeting

Philips Lighting has partnered with carpet company Desso in an effort to create what the companies are calling “luminous tiles.”

While Philips has successfully integrated its LEDs into textiles and ceilings, its venture into carpeting now can create ambiance, provide directions, and display news and weather information.

The luminous carpeting utilizes an eco-based light-transmissive backing (instead of a normal dark backing), installing it under the carpet and effectively eliminating the need to put any LEDs and its wiring into the carpet itself.

Designers are then able to customize the LEDs to create text, images, and directionals through a PC-to-LED panel connection.

It’s also possible to program the panels to flip on with appropriate messages during the event of an emergency.

Although the carpet has yet to make its way to the United States (its expected availability is second quarter of 2015), overseas the companies have installed the luminous tiles in banks, a German theater, workplaces, hospitality buildings, and sees a big opportunity in trade shows.
