Texas Agency Promoting Smaller Government and Partnership with the Private Sector

Effective February 1st, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) will no longer accept new requests to perform Architectural Barriers inspections.
The TDLR is the Texas umbrella occupational regulatory agency responsible for the regulation of 29 occupational industries, including Architectural Barriers.
TDLR indicates that the private market is already performing 96% of the State’s required inspections, and that this new policy will free up TDLR inspectors to focus on inspections that are best performed by agency staff, while creating more opportunity for the private sector Registered Accessibility Specialists (RAS).
TDLR summarized this announcement by commenting:
“The RAS program is an example of a very successful “Public-Private Partnership.”
The 400-plus private-sector RAS’s licensed by TDLR are more than capable of handling the additional workload, and TDLR welcomes the opportunity to help increase their market share.
This move aligns with TDLR’s credo of “Smaller, Smarter Government” and TDLR’s Core Values of Innovation and Customer Service.”
How refreshing to find a government agency promoting smaller government and partnership with the private sector – kudos to TDLR!
