United Airlines Launches Air Service Using Renewable Jet Fuel

April 19th, 2016 by Fiedler Group

Last month, United Airlines marked its use of renewable jet fuel in an inaugural flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

United Airlines has indicated it will purchase up to 15 million gallons of sustainable biofuel from AltAir Paramount over a three-year period.

The renewable fuel is the result of a process that uses technology from Honeywell UOP, and is fit for rigorous jet fuel performance, meeting ASTM D1655.

Diamond Green Diesel — which makes renewable diesel fuel in Louisiana — is also using the Honeywell UOP process.

Honeywell commented the fuel can offer “a 65 to 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with petroleum-based jet fuel” — a significant milestone in commercial aviation.

Honeywell VP Veronica May continued, “[this] demonstrates that the vision of producing real fuels from sustainable feedstocks has taken the crucial step from technology demonstration to commercial-scale production.”

United says it is using the AltAir biofuel daily on routes from LAX, storing and delivering the fuel the same way it does traditional fuel.
